Test the Boundaries of Indoor/Outdoor Living
Forgo walls in an outdoor living space and install isinglass, a translucent sheet of mica that weatherproofs the room. In fair weather, simply roll it up and out of the way. “The isinglass reminds you of a boat, allowing a view but giving protection on a windy or bad-weather day,” says interior designer Christine Fink. Though the outdoor space may feel like an extension of your living room, be sure to select materials and furniture that can withstand the elements. Christine opted for a polished concrete floor topped with an outdoor rug, and outfitted the space with African teak lounge furniture and blue-gray cushions in outdoor fabric.
Add a Splash of Color
All-white interiors have a clean, contemporary look, but a dash of a vibrant color can still look fresh and modern. “The turquoise subway-tile backsplash enhances the feeling of being close to the ocean,” Christine says.
Craft Multifunctional Spaces
Instead of creating a formal dining room, Christine designed a banquette framed by windows. The result is a space great for snacking, getting work done, or visiting with friends. “The cushions are made out of outdoor fabric that can withstand all the light entering this space but is still comfortable,” Christine says. A local artisan custom-made a freestanding replica of a ship’s table, highly lacquering the top and bolting the piece to the floor.
Create a High-tech Bath
Even beach lovers deserve a break, so make your bath a spa-like retreat with a steam shower and integrated sound system. Christine took it a step farther and disguised a mini-refrigerator as a bathroom cabinet. To keep the counters gadget-free, she outfitted cabinets with interior outlets.
Emulate the Beach
Christine and the homeowner first chose the blue tiles reminiscent of the ocean, and then found coordinating materials. “A Crema Europa marble top counter came to mind because it looks like a sand dune texture embedded into the material,” she says.
Make the Outdoors Great
Christine placed comfortable cushioned lounge chairs around a coffee table to fashion a seating area. “The furniture, especially the chairs, is a hipper, more modern take on Nantucket style,” she says. “Keeping the chairs low incorporates as much ocean view as possible for the home’s interior.”
